Get Ready Day
September 15, 2009

Healthy Delawareans with Disabilities Project Urges Emergency Planning

The Healthy Delawareans with Disabilities (HDWD) project encourages all Delawareans to participate in Get Ready Day on September 15, 2009.  Sponsored by the American Public Health Association, Get Ready Day (http://www.getreadyforflu.org/newsite.htm) is an effort to provide all people with the opportunity to learn about emergency preparedness.

Emergency situations can affect all people, especially people with disabilities who may find it challenging to respond quickly during an unforeseen event.  Being informed about the different types of emergencies that could happen where you live, such as a flu outbreak, flooding, or severe winter storm, and the appropriate ways to respond to them will impact the decisions you make and the actions you take. Plan, prepare and stay informed.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Take time this month to assemble an emergency supply kit, to make a family emergency plan and to become more informed about emergency resources in your area. Sign up today for the HDWD mailing list to receive emergency preparedness information such as helpful steps every person can take to prevent the flu and what items to buy in the threat of emergency.

The Healthy Delawareans with Disabilities Project will provide up to date and helpful information on how people with disabilities, healthcare providers, and caregivers can take simple steps to be confident and prepared in the event of an emergency. To begin planning, visit these sites and others you’ll find on GoHDWD.org.
